Winter weather can be a bundle of fun when youre a kid, but to adults it can be quite the nuisance and even a hazard. Here is a list of things you can do to help winterize your car for the snowy season.
- Have your car serviced by a mechanic before the first snow. Make sure your fluids are topped off and that your anti-freeze, wiper fluid, and oil are all suitable for the low temperatures in your area. In addition, check your brakes, battery, lights, heater, locks, thermostat, wipers, and ignition.
- If you live in the snowbelt make sure to get your snow tires on. The right traction will prevent skidding on ice or water. Keep your tires at the recommended pressure. Your pressure will drop one pound per square inch for every ten-degree decline in temperature.
- Some areas dont allow chains or studs for tires, but other states require them. If your state does allow them, then you should consider them. Make sure you know how to install them before the winter weather hits.
- Fuel can freeze, so make sure you keep your tank at least half full to avoid clogging fuel lines.
- Get yourself an emergency car kit. These include things like sand, flares, blankets or extra clothing, food and water. If youre going for a long distance trip make sure to wear warm layers of loose-fitting clothing.
- Before heading for the road make sure to get all the snow and ice off of your windows, windshield, mirrors, lights, and exhaust pipes. Its a good idea to knock the snow off the roof as well; otherwise, it could fall onto your windshield and reduce visibility.
- It never hurts to have your radio tuned to your local weather station to keep tabs on the weather and road conditions.
