SAFETY TIPS FOR SUV DRIVERS
Safety Tips For SUV Drivers
Even with the increasing costs of gas throughout the country, sport utility vehicles have never been so popular. SUVs are still considered dangerous vehicles by the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission (NHTSA). They still have the highest rollover rate over cars and trucks. SUVs just dont handle the same way as any other type of vehicle. Sport utility vehicles require different handling knowledge than cars or trucks, especially in bad weather. SUVs also have a high center of gravity, which could cause less experienced drivers to lose control when turning suddenly.
The biggest threat to SUV drivers continues to be rollovers, which usually happen when an SUV veers off the road and hits a curb, ditch, or soft patch of soil. The NHTSA reports that 10,000 people die every year in rollover accidents. So its important to follow a few tips for driving your SUV safely.
Tips for SUV drivers
  • Learn to drive your SUV. You can practice driving your SUV in secluded parking lots or otherwise empty spaces. Get a feel for the handling under different conditions, and things like turning and braking.
  • Avoid sharp steering changes. Sport utility vehicles are not designed to take turns quickly.
  • Their center of gravity is much higher than a sedans.
  • Be considerate of other drivers. Its easy for you to see the road now that you are higher up in the driving position, but others around you lose visibility due to your size, especially people behind you because they cant see the traffic in front of you.
  • Recognize your visual limitations. Many SUVs have tinted windows, which can make viewing traffic to the side of your vehicle difficult. Check your mirrors often to lessen your blind spots.
  • Brake better. SUVs require more braking room than most vehicles, so allow yourself plenty of time to stop, especially in slippery conditions.
  • Buckle up. Wearing a safety belt is always a good idea.
  • Slow down. Slowing down and driving defensively can give you an edge when avoiding an accident.
  • Avoid overloads. Loads of cargo or people in an SUV will further increase its center of gravity. This makes sharp turns even more dangerous.
  • Dont carry too much weight. Over-weighting your SUC can cause your brakes to tear and your tires to become overheated, which could cause a blowout.
  • Maintain your vehicle properly. Make sure to have regular service and maintenance done on your vehicle.
