With gas prices on the up and up, it�s becoming more and more expensive to drive. But you do still have some control over your gas expenditures. Here are 10 steps you can take that will make it a little easier on your pocketbook.
  • Drive Less � It sounds a little obvious, but in the long-run it will pay off to kill 2 birds with one stone when you take the family truckster out for a spin. If you have two errands to run, you might as well knock them both out in one trip instead of two. Consider carpooling with co-workers and parents whenever possible. If you live close to work then take the bus or a train, or maybe even take a walk.
  • Drive Slower � Staying within the speed limit is a good idea anyway, but It can also save you some gas money.
  • Maintain a steady speed � Accelerating eats away at your gas tank. Try to avoid quick stops and starts as well as heavy traffic when possible. When on the highway, use cruise control.
  • Keep you car tuned up � Regularly change the oil and check to air and oil filters. Have your spark plug and emission-control system checked.
  • Check your tires � Tires that are over or under inflated can cause a dip in your fuel economy.
  • Comparison shop � Look for the lowest gas prices from station to station. Even if you still have a half tank of gas, go ahead and top it off if you see a great deal.
  • Pump your own � Use the self serve whenever possible.
  • Use the correct octane gas � You really only need to use the octane rating recommended for your vehicle. You car probably doesn�t need premium to run just fine.
  • Turn the engine off � If you are waiting somewhere more than a minute, don�t let the engine idle and drain your gas tank.
  • Lighten up � When your car is carrying extra weight it consumes more fuel.
