WHAT IS SR-22 INSURANCE
What is SR-22 Insurance?
SR-22 insurance varies from state to state so it may be difficult to clearly define its meaning. An SR-22 insurance policy typically is a motor vehicle liability insurance policy required by individuals who have had their drivers license suspended or revoked. Its a unique policy for reinstatement of ones drivers license because it requires the insurance company to notify the department of motor vehicle if the policy were to be cancelled, terminated or lapsed. This way, if any of these things occur, your license would be suspending until the policy is brought back in force or reinstated. Most states had laws that required the SR-22 insurance to be carried for a certain period (three years) after the end of the suspension.
Not all insurance companies carry SR-22 insurance, so you will have to do some research. Typically, insurance companies who take high risks drivers should carry such insurance policies. Once you purchased the policy, you will need to provide proof to the department of motor vehicle. You can present a copy of the SR-22 insurance or a copy of your application binder while you wait until your actual policy is received.
Some states required SR-22 insurance for those that have DUI cases. And in some cases if you have had an uninsured accident or received several tickets within a short period of time. Nonetheless, SR-22 insurance is a way for the department of motor vehicle to keep tabs on drivers who have had negative driving experience that would or might have lead to suspension.
